In the Town of Easthampton (NY) there's a locale called "Promised Land"- seen on our 1897 nautical chart. This area - now Napeague State Park- was abuzz with many fish factories circa 1900. Legend has it that the name came when Congress promised that the fish factory in Napeague could never be moved due to the smell. Today the area is Napeague State Park.
