Old Maps at NERGC in Providence

21st Apr 2015

The "Old Maps" team  was in Providence Rhode Island this past weekend - with displays of charming old maps and CDROMS for sale of over 100 New England County Wall maps.

===================================================================

We arrived Thursday morning and set up our 20 foot wide booth in the exhibit hall

Dave & Sarah hauling boxes to the Exhibit hall on 4th floor of the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence.

We were busy Thursday evening when the Exhibit Hall opened.  The customers were genealogists - amateur and professional - from all over the USA. Most were from New England of course, but we sold maps to a fellow from California and met people from Missouri and other far-away locales. 900+ people registered - we must have met most of them Thursday-Friday-Saturday.

Our claim to fame is the CDROMS of 19th century wall maps - scanned and converted to a convenient book-like PDF format.  Genealogists know these maps are now available from the Library of Congress and other on-line sites, but we make access convenient.

Our CDROMs were displayed in stand-up displays, with 11x17 paper printouts on the table beside them.

On Saturday afternoon I gave a talk on using old maps for genealogical research. In the background is a print of the rare 1831 map of the state of Rhode Island - and the contents of a tripod display I had just knocked over.

We had a great time at the New England Genealogical Convention - we sold lots of maps and enjoyed meeting so many nifty people!
