A Canoe Place near the Shinnecock Indian Reservation (Long Island)
20th Apr 2015
This 1897 map excerpt shows a Canoe Place and a Canal (top of clip) near the Shinnecock Indian Reservation in Southampton (NY). The reservation is well known - in fact it received Federal recognition in 2010 - but what's the story beyond the "Canoe Place" and the canal?
We have 2 earlier maps of the same area, 1857 and 1878. They both show the Canoe Place, but not the canal. This suggests a small water crossing between the two bays in early days, enlarged to a canal by 1897. The two earlier charts do not label the Indian Reservation.
